That Goku speech to Freeza is only in the English dub. Goku doesn't care so much about being a hero, but prefers having a good fight and becoming stronger

Daisy Mayway yep. The dub makes him too much of a conventional goody two-shoes.

Accurate, though I prefer the dub over all, it's only that speech and a few other odd notes that really makes him seem all that different from the original character otherwise he's similar enough, it's not like he doesn't constantly talk about how he loves fighting in the English dub.

in the LA dub he speaks more about helping others, that talk about battling is also present but he only speaks about being excited with strong opponents while either expecting them in a tournament or at the battle field, is not like he is constantly looking for it, that said, he cares more about his training though

    • @AlfredoFilmGeek

To be fair at that moment he is more concerned with punishing Freeza than having a good fight.

In the original dub, when Freeza asks Goku "What are you", he responds (something along the lines of):
"You already know. I'm a Saiyan from planet Earth and I'm here to defeat you. A legendary warrior fueled by rage despite his peaceful heart. I'm Super Saiyan Son Goku!"
This speaks of early DBs mindset of necessary violence to defeat pointless violence. Goku wasn't there to enjoy a battle with the emperor of the universe, he (ultimately) came to stop Freeza from causing more destruction. In the end, Goku spares him.

Von k I like the the consept as the mother of SO6P and her japanese mythology origins (Okami fans raise your hands), but I was very disappointed in her onscreen appearance (back when Naruto came out weekly). As an avid fan of Naruto before Shippuuden anime even started, I felt like her inclusion in the end (although "foreshadowed" by Madara, she was asspulled into existance) was way, WAY too rushed, and thus she lacked character and became a nameless run-of-the-mill final god boss of the series. She had absurd powers which didn't make a great deal of sense in story context, and I'm pretty sure Kishimoto made her as a failsafe in case Madara got too powerful 😅 which he totally did after gaining both Rinnegan and eating the Shinju fruit.
tl;dr I like her design and backstory, I don't like her onscreen appearances at all. She lacks character (=she doesn't have a character), she's a brainless god puppet controlled by Zetsu.

Maybe, Maybe, but considering what came after he mindset would probably be like.... woooow, he is strong, i want to fight him to be strong as well... if he dies lets revive him if hes stronger so i can keep getting strong... oh, the universe will be destroyed because of my selfishness needs of being strong and fighting strong enemies? Fuck it, I wans to be strong, fuck the world, fuck you!

S.G. Black yeah. A big point of Goku's character is that he doesn't fight for good or to be a hero, and he doesn't like to save the world all that much in the sense that it becomes a chore for him.
He just loves to fight. So when he sees a strong opponent, he enjoys fighting it. The fact that he saves the day doing so is a bonus.

Goku, in the original manga/anime (NOT in the Funimation dub), is not a Superman type character. He fights for the challenge, not to protect others, and is prone to making selfish decisions in order to get a good fight. He has put the world/universe in danger a number of times for the sake of a good fight.

An interesting connection to Buddhism, especially Mahayana Buddhism, that I think could be seen in Dragon Ball Z is that of the Bodhisattva and a common plot element seen throughout the Android Saga/Cell Saga. To give a brief summary for those who don't know, a Bodhisattva is an individual who has gained the ability to reach Nirvana but stays behind to help teach others to reach Nirvana as well. Just a quick disclaimer, I'm not a Buddhist nor do I believe in Buddhist teachings, I simply find it very fascinating, even if I don't fully understand it as much as someone like an actual Buddhist would.
A common belief that I see throughout Buddhism is that by to achieve Nirvana, one must first understand how the world truly works, that there is a, for lack of a better term, "correct" way of viewing the world and that be seeing the world from this viewpoint, a person has taken an extra step further towards Nirvana.
Similarly, during the Cell Saga, we see Vegeta, Future Trunks, Goku and Gohan training to gain more power from the Super Saiyan transformation and utilize the form to it's fullest, which I think could be interpreted as an allegory for striving to reach Nirvana. Vegeta and Future Trunks manage to achieve Grades 2 and 3 of the form, but still retains and even magnifies the forms disadvantages, such as the aggressive behavior that comes with the form. On the other hand, when Goku and Gohan are training together, Goku realizes how inefficient the forms actually are and opts to train himself and Gohan to master both the mental state of the form as well as the forms energy output, being able to subconsciously maintain the form in a more peaceful state of mind.

Yes, in the end of GT, Goku ascended to heaven (or outside of Samsara, worldly suffering, and entered Parinirvana). This means he was a Bodhisattva during his life (a soon to be Buddha) as he was using his knowledge and power to help guide people, while delaying his passage to Nirvana. Shen Long even says "It is time", and Goku understood what that was about. DBS is a load of money grabbing shit, so I don't even want to get into that.

I might never have heard the american dub. Only 5min or so of Team Four Star's DBZ Abridged, which must have been channeling the american dub. People seem to enjoy that at least, but I certainly didn't.
I think most of the Dragon Ball videogames feature the japanese dub instead of the american one, so I don't know if there would be many opportunities to be exposed to it. Though, granted, I think even the japanese dub is awful, by virtue of having Goku be a grown ass man with a woman's voice.

It's less that they wanted to and more that they had to for it to be shown in the US on daytime TV. Japan (particularly in the 80s) doesn't see a problem with sex jokes on kids' shows, but things are different in the west. That's why they went back and dubbed everything uncut later.
And personally, I find the line "the world's most comfortable pair of ultra soft underwear" to be a lot funnier.

I'm surprised you didn't talk about the main philosophy of Dragon Ball - There's always someone better.
This theme is the main reason why Dragon Ball was so great because of how it relates to Goku and Vegeta's characters and the relevance it has to real life work.
Goku not being brought up in Saiyan society didn't follow their way of thinking: The idea that hard work means less than social hierarchy and one's value is set entirely in stone by statistics. He developed an outlook in life that was in conjunction with his own purity due to Master Roshi's teachings of there's always someone better. His purity being his unshakeable Saiyan nature which goes against the conventional idea on what it means to be pure of heart.
Accepting there's always someone better leads to a more healthy mindset when it comes to work (Especially in sports) because one's mind wouldn't be focus mainly on besting others which could lead to disappointment and lack of satisfaction with their own achievements as opposed to the satisfaction one gets by not focusing too much on besting others which would lead to a more happy and healthy mind. Focusing too much on besting others can negatively affects one will to do work, because of the anger and frustration one can have by not besting others. That very frustration can hold one back from achieving the heights one could've achieve because it could lead to them overworking themselves or not pace themselves properly. This could lead to even depression. This negative mindset that is the opposite of Roshi's teachings is represented through Vegeta's character.
Vegeta embodies the negative effects that come with not following Master Roshi's teachings, hence why he couldn't catch up with Goku. Although Vegeta is more gifted than Goku he allowed himself to be more concern with outside thoughts such as social status and money (Mainly social status) which hindered his great potential. The best example of this in DBZ was in the Cell arc when Vegeta couldn't achieve Mastered Super Saiyan like Goku despite being a better genius on paper because he allowed his anger towards not being the best consume him and could only aim for the forced variation of the MSSJ known as the grade forms (Ultra Super Saiyan), which had negative effects of stamina consumption and speed decrease, similar to how athletes who are unsatisfied with improvement for improvement sake rely on forced methods such as steroids to get better, which in the end can led to side effects such as anger and depression, which Vegeta had in the end of the Cell arc because of the mindset he placed on his training.

    • @lalalolo2611

You missed the point of the cell saga. Goku became stronger than Vegeta because Goku trained with his kid, Gohan, and wanted to empowered him (Gohan) to become better than himself and take the mantle of hero. By training together, they achieved MSSJ. Vegeta in the other hand, could not achieved this form because he was still a dick at this time of the series and only trained for himself instead of training together with his future son Trunks because he wanted to be number 1 above anybody else. This was proven when Vegeta appeared before imperfect cell declaring that Trunks was the second best after himself, and also how Trunks didn't want to show off his power in front of Vegeta in order to protect his pride. Goku training with Gohan was the moment that widen the gap between Goku amd Vegeta which he never recovered, at least not in DBZ.
Besides, the someone is always better than you doesn't match here. Goku was borned from a lower class with a power level of 2, Vegeta was born as an elite class with a power level of 10,000? (Correct me if i am wrong with the number). But Goku was able to reach Vegeta's level and even surpassed him achieved through sheer training and martial arts skills. You could said Goku is better at training than Vegeta because he is more experienced in doing so since childhood, while Vegeta only started training in the martial arts latter in live after meeting with Goku and his friends.

That speech Goku gave to Frieza is something the dub made up to make Goku more "heroic" and "superman-like". In the original he just says that he is a Saiyan from earth and that his pure heart was filled with an inextinguishable anger thanks to Frieza's actions, "(he is) Son Goku, a SUPER SAIYAN!" which is much better imo as it shows Frieza the irony and the payback of his actions. If Frieza hadn't been such an asshole and acted so recklessly then he wouldn't have to face his greatest nightmare, which he tried to prevent from happening when he blew up Planet Vegeta.

That representation of goku of dbz talking to freezer is straight wrong if you wanna talk about the author's point of view, cause that is the English translation, in which they decided to make goku way more like superman rather than the original version in Japanese.

    • @zaidabraham7310

It's not so much that they "decided" to do it. Funimation didn't have a Japanese person in the studio to translate the Japanese dialogue, so they relied on a Japanese-to-English dictionary. And it was the 90's so they didn't have reliable translation software. So a lot of the meaning got lost in translation.
The Funimation dub of DBZ Kai fixes these issues and is a lot more faithful to the source material.

Dragon Ball is a commentary on the fear of nuclear power and climate change. Pilaf's squad represent the Russians post-WWII. Dragon Balls represent nuclear power. Son Goku represents humanity's only hope, pure innocence. Bulma represents the scientists on the forefront of nuclear research, single-minded in her ambition, but she also represents the average person with her obsession with vanity and convenience. The pairing of Bulma and Goku suggests the necessity of child like purity in achieving proper use of nuclear power. I started rewatching the first episodes (subbed) recently lol

for the people commenting that "the speech goku gave freeza isnt in the original version therefore it isnt valid", my take on it goes as such:
when dealing with different versions, or takes, on the story/source material (and yes, i include dubs and localizations in this), i think both should be viewed as separate entities, that may resemble each other, but that usually differ, sometimes in significant and even fundamental ways. So, although the original goku doesnt fit as well with the ideas being presented here, there is a version that does.
if you'd like to see a more thoughtfull and detailed explanation of the idea i presented here, i'd sugest Explanation Point's "A Defense of Dubs" video, as we have very similar views on the matter, so i dont think it's worth to basically just re-write the script from his video here, whren i could just redirect to his amazing work on it.

    • @omegascizor5469

rafaellerescapone wow your desperate to make what they say are right. Listen dubs are just that dubs you can't just say because the dub Goku fits in with what they say makes it right. Because they say toriyamas work. They are spreading miss information. It's not what the author intended. Yes it's true that in the dub Goku was like this. But this shows that they haven't done there research enough to even know of anime only scene and dub only lines. This goes to show that maybe you should be skeptical of what their saying.

    • @werrkowalski2985
      @werrkowalski2985 6 лет назад +4

This is actually a serious problem, It seems that the one of the points made is that Goku also later in the series fights to prevent violence, but it is not always true, in fact the Freezer case may be THE WORST ARGUMENT YOU COULD MADE. When Goku transformed into super saiyan he wasn't fighting to protect all living things like it is implied in the flawed english dub.
I rewatched the episode, Goku overall was very confident that he can crush Frieza when he went super saiyan. Earlier he said that Frieza can destroy planets but he cannot defeat him. In the famous speech mentioned in the video Goku was actually saying that he represents saiyans (wants to fulfill Vegeta's wish he told him when he was dying, it is first of all an act of honour), he is filled with anger (and will take revenge on Frieza) and he is Goku, a legendary super saiyan. I think that is the best translation of what he said and what he meant. So basically he wants to take revenge on Frieza for what he has done.

    • @corumirsei8550

It goes against author intent thus the english dub is plainly wrong.Respect the creator.

    • @rafaellerescapone
      @rafaellerescapone 6 лет назад

well, i think then it comes to the old argument of who possesses the story, the author, and thus their intention, or the fans, and thus only the end result and its cultural legacy should be taken into account. i do understand that viewing it the way i do goes against the mangaka's original idea, but the way i see it manga goku, sub goku and dub goku are three different characters, and should be interpreted as such.
